Welcome to St Peter’s

For over 900 years our church has existed in Birstall, but we’re not just an ancient building – we’re a living church.

The people who now worship here are determined that it should be relevant in the 21st century. Our purpose in a nutshell is: to be different and make a difference. We seek to do that through the priorities of Worship, Fellowship, Discipleship, Ministry and Mission.

Please explore this site, whether you’re looking for information on baptisms, weddings, funerals, services and events, or the history of the church.

Sunday Services

Our traditional service include hymns, a sermon, and we share in communion on the weeks when our priest-in-charge Jess is with us. We also have a more contemporary service involving modern worship music and childrens’ work every week.

  • Traditional service: 9:30am – 10:30am
  • Contemporary service: 11:00am – 12:15pm

Baptisms

We are pleased when parents consider Baptism (or ‘Christening’ as it’s popularly known) for their children and, because we believe that it’s a very significant event, we want to make sure that we do the very best for both parents and children.

Weddings

Weddings are joyful times. We, at St Peter’s, welcome enquiries about weddings. Anyone who lives within the parish of St Peter’s can get married in the church – but if one of you has been divorced a special service may be an option to discuss with the Vicar.

Funerals

We are St Peter’s are here to help and support you at a time when feelings and emotions are very raw, and many decisions have to be made in a short time. If you choose a Church of England funeral service, either  in church or at the crematorium, we will be here to assure you of God’s compassion and grace.

Safeguarding

We believe that every person, child or adult should receive the respect and care that they deserve as God, in his love, has made them. At St Peter’s Church we believe that abuse of any kind is unacceptable.

The Parochial Church Council (PCC) of St Peter’s Birstall takes its responsibility to protect and safeguard the welfare of children and vulnerable adults seriously. The PCC adopted the Diocese of Leeds Safeguarding Policy at its meeting on 13th May 2019.
