Modern Sunday Service – for all ages

At 10.30am on Sunday we hold a contemporary service particularly aimed at families and those who are ‘young at heart’.

What to expect

Our 10:30 service lasts between one and one-and-a-quarter hours, generally finishing between 11:30 and 11:45 after which we serve coffee and tea.

We also celebrate Birthdays; share joys and concerns; listen to a talk (normally lasting about 10 minutes, during which there is no pressure to laugh at the ‘jokes’!) and, of course, sing and pray.

All the words you need (song words and prayers) are displayed on screens around the church, but there’s no pressure to participate.

Music is provided by a band and mainly draws on worship songs written in the 21st Century, although we do enjoy doing our own versions of both older hymns and choruses. Our 10:30 service has a few ‘flavours’, so each Sunday in the month is slightly different.

First Sunday of the month

On the first Sunday in the month we hold our all-age service when young and old worship together. (See below to find out about groups for the children.) As this service is for all ages, the music and talk cater for the younger members of the congregation. We sometimes do craft activities based on the theme of the service, but there’s no pressure to participate if you don’t want to.

Second, fourth and fifth Sunday of the month

Our 10.30 communion services are held twice a month (or three if there’s a 5th Sunday in the month). Children go out to their own groups during the service, and return for the end of the service. We invite everyone to the Communion Rail. If you take the bread and wine in your own church we welcome you to do the same here. Otherwise you can come to the communion rail for a blessing – but there’s no pressure to do anything you don’t want to.

Third Sunday of the month

On the third Sunday we have a ‘Word and Worship’ service. There is no communion in this service, and we spend a little bit more time worshipping God in song.

Facilities for children

Children are very welcome at our 10:30 services, but don’t worry if they are a bit noisy – it’s what children do best!

You are welcome to keep your school-age children with you for the full service, but if you want a bit of a break they can be catered for by our childrens’ groups. These groups take place in rooms at the rear of the church building, just a few steps from the main area of the church.

Babies and toddlers are catered for in our Little Fishes group, where they can take part in fun play, singing, and hear stories from the Bible.

We provide a Explorers group for children of primary or junior school age led by experienced leaders, where children learn about stories from the Bible and can take part in fun activities such as planting seeds, making art, or even doing a spot of baking.

Young people in secondary school are welcome to join our ‘Rock Solid’ group, where they can engage in deeper learning and discussion. Our young people often tackle the same subject matter as the adults in the main church service, drawing from Bible stories and learning how they can be applied to modern life.

All our young children’s group leaders are fully DBS checked, and our Safeguarding Officer is responsible for ensuring our policies keep everyone safe.

Refreshments are served after all our services and we are pleased to serve real fair-traded coffee for the discerning palate. We would love to meet you and have a chat after the service, and if it is your first time visiting St Peters we would appreciate you filling in our visitor card to help us find out more about you.
