Bell Ringing

St Peter's boasts a magnificent ring of 8 bells weighing 22 Cwt and in Eb. The Vicar boasts that they are the best sounding bells in Yorkshire.

Currently our local band practice on Thursday nights at 7:15pm.

Our Tower Captain is Miles Lawson who can be emailed by clicking here.

Miles is an experienced instructor in the Art of Campanology and has trained all the local band himelf. We welcome anyone above the age of 10 who can navigate our tower stairs to join us at Practice on Thursdays.

As a band we are also affiliated to the Yorkshire Association of Change Ringers.

The Bells of St Peter's

The current ring of 8 bells is as follows.

Treble Bell - 5 Cwt 0 Qtr 21 Lbs - Inscription in 1819 to William Dobson, Norfolk. The bell was recast by Gillett & Johnston of Croyden in 1919.

2nd Bell - 5 wt 0 Qtr 10 Lbs - Inscription "Ring in the Christ that is to be"  The bell was recast by Gillett & Johnston of Croyden in 1919.

3rd Bell - 5 Cwt 2 Qtr 21 Lbs - Inscription "The Lord to prais my voice I'll raise"  The bell was recast by Gillett & Johnston of Croyden in 1919.

4th Bell - 6 Cwt 3 Qtr 23 Lbs - Inscription "Ring out the darkness of the land"  The bell was recast by Gillett & Johnston of Croyden in 1919.

5th Bell - 9 Cwt 0 Qtr 25 Lbs - Inscription "O sing praises unto the Lord for He is Gracious"  The bell was recast by Gillett & Johnston of Croyden in 1919.

6th Bell - 10 Cwt 0 Qtr 25 Lbs - Inscription "Our voices shall with Joyfull sound, Shake hills and valleys echo round"  The bell was recast by Gillett & Johnston of Croyden in 1919.

7th Bll - 15 Cwt 1 Qtr 2 Lbs - Inscription "Ring out the thousand wars of old, Ring in the thousand years of peace"  The bell was recast by Gillett & Johnston of Croyden in 1919.

Tenor Bell - 22 Cwt 1 Qtr 7 Lbs - Inscription :-

(waiste) "This peal of 8 bells was recast  A.D. 1919
             In: Mem: Edward Brooke Longbottom
             Leutenant 7th West Yorkshire Regiment
             We ring in the Love of Truth and Right
             H.T. Robinson Vicar
             William Blakeley Churchwarden"

The bell was recast by Gillett & Johnston of Croyden in 1919.
